Why it matters
Surigao port is northern Caraga's main ferry and cargo point, connecting mainland Mindanao to Siargao, Dinagat, Leyte, and Eastern Visayas. Adjacent to the harbor, the Surigao City Boulevard works as a waterfront walkway and night food area after dark. The city also marks its history through the annual Bonok-Bonok Festival and the memory of the Surigao Gold treasure.
Place guide
Eating Your Way Through the Port: Tyanggehan sa Boulevard
If you have a few hours to wait for your ferry, skip the terminal snacks and head to the Surigao City Boulevard. This is where the 'Tyanggehan' night market happens every evening. It is a long row of stalls selling some of the best grilled food in Mindanao. You have to try the grilled tuna panga and the spicy chicken. It is just a quick tricycle ride from the main port terminal.
Pro Tips for the Siargao Ferry
Ferry slots to Siargao can sell out days in advance during the peak season of 2026. The most reliable trip is the 6:00 AM fast craft. It is less likely to be cancelled due to afternoon weather shifts in the Surigao Strait. Always book your tickets online to avoid a five hour wait at the terminal ticket windows. Also, arrive at the port at least an hour early to pay your terminal fees and get through security. If you are on a budget, the RORO is much cheaper but it will take you about 4 hours instead of the 1.5 hours on the fast craft.
The Surigao Gold and Local Heritage
Surigao's biggest historical claim is the discovery of a massive precolonial gold collection. While the original pieces are currently on loan to the Ayala Museum in Manila for a long term exhibit until 2027, the story is still very much alive here. You should visit the Surigaonon Heritage Center near the port to learn how a local excavator found 4kg gold chains in the nearby mountains. It gives you a real sense of the wealth and power that Surigao held long before the Spanish arrived.
Local context
More Than The Siargao Transfer
For many visitors, Surigao port is simply the last step before Siargao. But the port area explains Surigao City's role as a connector between mainland Mindanao, northern Caraga island communities, and Eastern Visayas. Fast craft, RoRo vessels, passenger ferries, cargo, commuters, tourists, and logistics traffic all overlap in the port district.
Just a short tricycle ride from the port is the Surigao City Boulevard. It is famous for grilled squid, tuna panga, and local spicy chicken. Surigao is famous for a massive discovery of gold from before the colonial era in 1981. While the actual 4kg gold chains and waistbands are currently on exhibit at the Ayala Museum in Manila (until 2027), you can still learn the full story at the Surigaonon Heritage Center near the port. It means 'heavy downpour' and is a thanksgiving ritual that brings together indigenous Mamanwa dance and Catholic faith.
Weather And Strait Context
The Surigao Strait is navigable but sensitive to weather, with strong currents and seasonal conditions affecting departures. Typhoons and low pressure systems can quickly cancel or delay sailings, so checking status before arriving at the port is standard practice.
The port area itself has the ordinary infrastructure of a provincial working terminal: ticketing offices, waiting areas, food stalls, tricycles, jeepneys, and boarding calls. At night, it turns into a large street food area known as Tyanggehan. It is highly recommended to book your tickets online at least a day in advance to avoid the long terminal wait.
On the Ground
The Eva Macapagal Port Terminal Building on Borromeo Street, Barangay Taft, Surigao City, has been managed by Globalport Terminals Inc. since December 2021. The terminal records approximately 1.37 million passenger movements and 9 million tons of cargo annually, with 529 meters of berth length accommodating vessel traffic from RORO carriers to fast craft. Five operators share the Surigao to Dapa route to Siargao Island: Montenegro Lines, Evaristo and Sons, JP Shipping, Oceanjet, and Philfast Ferries.
Eastbound departures begin as early as 4:00 AM, with the last scheduled trip out at 3:30 PM; the most reliable window for confirmed sailings is 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The terminal building offers ATM access, a money exchange counter, mobile charging stations, and shower facilities, which passengers arriving on overnight buses from Davao or Cagayan de Oro use before early morning boarding.
An OTOP shop at adjacent Luneta Park stocks packaged regional products. For schedule confirmation during weather advisories, the port's direct contact line is +63 86-231-3191. It's the best place to kill time if you have an early morning boat. As of 2026, ferries to Siargao sell out fast, especially the mid morning trips.
The 6:00 AM fast craft is the most reliable and less likely to be cancelled by afternoon swells. If you are here in early September, the city explodes with the Bonok-Bonok Festival. It is one of the most high energy street festivals in Mindanao.
