Map address
General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte 8419, Caraga
Why it matters
Siargao is known for surfing but remains local: mangrove forests, island barangays, recovery stories from Typhoon Odette, and an identity facing the Pacific. It sits inside Caraga, a region often discussed through resources and infrastructure. Tourism growth here is inseparable from disaster recovery, local livelihoods, and environmental pressure on the reef and mangrove systems.
Place guide
Practical things that guides don't always say clearly enough
The Siargao International Surfing Cup happens every September at Cloud 9 and is the most crowded week on the island by a significant margin. If you're going for the surf competition atmosphere, that's the time. If you want to actually get in the water at Cloud 9 without a crowd, avoid that week. Peak surf season is September to November, which overlaps with typhoon season. The same weather systems that produce the best waves also produce the strongest risk of travel delays.
Access and Practical Notes
For non surfers, the best windows are March to May for island hopping and clear lagoon water, and December to February for pleasant weather without the surf crowd intensity. Magpupungko Rock Pools are tidal and remarkable at low tide, when the natural rock formations trap clear saltwater pools. Checking tide schedules before you plan that trip is necessary. At high tide the pools are submerged and the whole point is gone. Sugba Lagoon in Del Carmen requires a boat to reach and is worth the trip, but book early on weekends.
Food, Market, and Local Rhythm
General Luna is where most accommodation, restaurants, and surf schools concentrate. Cloud 9 is a ten to fifteen minute ride by habal-habal from the General Luna center. Renting a motorcycle is the most practical way to explore independently. Rental runs around PHP 300 to 500 per day. Accommodation books up months in advance during peak season. After Typhoon Odette in December 2021, most of the island rebuilt quickly but the recovery period shaped a new wave of locally owned businesses that replaced some of the larger pre typhoon operations.
Local context
Local details to know
Cloud 9 in General Luna is the best known reef break on the island and is central to its reputation for surfing. Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape covers marine, wetland, mangrove, and island ecosystems around the island group.
The Del Carmen Mangrove Reserve is recognized by Ramsar and includes one of the Philippines' largest contiguous mangrove forests. Typhoon Odette in December 2021 made storm recovery and sustainable tourism part of the local conversation.
