Davao City to Host the First Full IRONMAN Triathlon in Mindanao
Sunrise Events Inc. and the Davao City Government announced on September 8, 2026 that Davao will stage the first full IRONMAN triathlon in Mindanao in June 2027. The race adds a 3.8 kilometer swim, 180 kilometer bike leg and 42.2 kilometer run to the half distance event the city has hosted since 2018.
What Davao announced
Sunrise Events Inc. and the Davao City Government confirmed the race at a press conference on September 8, 2026. It will be the first full IRONMAN triathlon held in Mindanao. The inaugural IRONMAN Philippines Davao is scheduled for June 13, 2027.
The full race pairs a 3.8 kilometer swim with a 180 kilometer bike leg and a 42.2 kilometer run, with a 17 hour cutoff. It will run on the same weekend as the shorter IRONMAN 70.3 Davao, giving athletes a choice between the full course and the half distance race. The 70.3 format consists of a 1.9 kilometer swim, 90 kilometer bike leg and 21.1 kilometer run.
The course along the Coastal Road
The swim will take place in the waters of the Davao Gulf, with Mount Apo framing the inland view on clear days. Athletes will complete two loops of the 3.8 kilometer ocean swim before the 180 kilometer bike leg, a three lap route through the Coastal Road, MacArthur Highway and other city roads that returns to Bago Aplaya Esplanade.
The marathon is set as a four loop run on the Davao City Coastal Road between the Tulip Rotonda area and Bago Esplanade. Organizers point to the Bucana Bridge, the crossing over the Davao River that is part of the Coastal Road network, as a signature stretch of the route.
Why Davao, and the move from Subic
The full distance IRONMAN Philippines had run in Subic Bay for five years before the shift south. Sunrise Events President Princess Galura said the group wanted to reach new parts of the country. "After 5 years of being in Subic Bay, we said we want to explore other parts of the Philippines, and we are very thankful to the City Government of Davao for welcoming us," she said. Galura also pointed to Davao's infrastructure, accommodations and record of hosting the 70.3 series.
The race is timed to fall alongside the Duawa Davao Festival in June 2027, part of city efforts to lift sports, wellness and year round tourism. Organizers said a full IRONMAN can turn a one day competition into a longer visit, with athletes, families and support crews staying in the city for several days before race day.
How IRONMAN grew in Davao since 2018
IRONMAN first came to Davao with the 70.3 race on March 25, 2018. That event was the first IRONMAN staged in Mindanao, which extended the series across all three of the country's main island groups after earlier races in Luzon and the Visayas.
The 70.3 race has since been held in 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2026. The March 2026 edition was its fifth staging in the city and its first under a new title sponsor. The 2027 plan builds on that record by adding the longer course rather than replacing the half distance event.
The 2018 debut drew close to 1,800 athletes from more than 40 countries, an early sign of demand that helped keep the race on the city's calendar. Later editions stayed on the Davao Coastal Road as the road network around it took shape.
Slots, registration and expected turnout
The Davao race will offer at least 40 qualifying slots, with room to raise the number to 50, for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Registration opened on the day of the announcement, and by early afternoon close to 400 athletes had signed up across the two distances.
Sunrise Events set an initial target of about 400 entries for the full course and another 600 to 700 for the 70.3 race, while saying turnout could run higher. The early full distance field drew athletes from 15 countries, and the 70.3 field from at least 13.
Beyond the registered racers, the group expects support crews, coaches and families to add to the weekend crowd. That is the visitor spending the city is counting on, since each full distance entrant tends to travel with more people and stay longer than a shorter race would require.
